Very scarce Elgin “Direct Reading” men’s Retro Modern design jump hour wristwatch in 10K white rolled gold plate and stainless steel with original bracelet.
Most collectors to refer to this model of Elgin’s “Direct Reading” as the “Golfball” watch because of the dimpled case. Elgin cataloged it as the “Direct Reading 9587” and it was priced at $69.50 in 1957. It is very scarce in white and this is the only example I’ve had with the correct Hadley white gold filled bracelet. The watch features an early use of the digital concept, with two rotating disks displaying the time through a window in the case, with the hour disk jumping at each hour. This example is in crisp, excellent condition with no brassing. The case measures 38mm long and 31mm wide. Original dial disks are excellent. I’ve just serviced the watch and the hour disk jumps crisply at the top of each hour. Glass crystal is superb. This watch has a 17-jewel Elgin grade 717 jump hour movement. Original Hadley white gold filled bracelet is excellent.
