Scarce Gruen “Curvex Ristside Fraternity” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in 10K yellow gold fill, circa 1950.
Scarce and highly desirable, the “Ristside Fraternity” is one of Gruen’s most dramatic Curvex models. The large, stepped hinged lugs prompt many collectors to refer to it as the “Bat Watch” or “Angel Wing Watch.” The hinged lugs allow the watch to be worn in a conventional manner on top of the wrist, or as a driver’s watch on the side of the wrist… hence the name “Ristside.” It was priced to consumers at $71.50 in 1950. It is in crisp, excellent condition with only the faintest hints of wear to the very edges of the lugs. Extremely curved caseback is excellent and unengraved, with a couple of tiny specks of wear. Case measures 47mm long and 24mm wide. Black dial is excellent. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 17 jewel Gruen grade 440 Precision Curvex movement.
