Scarce Hamilton “Drake” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in 10K white gold fill, circa 1934.
The “Drake” has a large, curved case with Art Deco steps along the sides. Offered at a time when white gold was rapidly declining in popularity, the white gold filled “Drake” was produced in only very small numbers... just 4,121 were made... priced to consumers at $37.50 in 1934. It was in the first group of Hamilton watches made in 10K gold fill and priced under $40.00... a significant departure from Hamilton’s normally steep pricing ($50.00 and up), and an effort to boost lagging sales during the worst years of the Great Depression. This example is in excellent condition with light brassing to the lugs, plus a few light marks to the edges of the case. Caseback is excellent and unengraved. The case measures 41mm long and 27mm wide. Dial has been beautifully refinished to its correct original appearance with a silver Butler finish and stylized Art Deco Egyptian luminous numerals and hands. Has new glass crystal. This watch is powered by its original 17 jewel Hamilton grade 987-F movement.
