Scarce Hamilton “Ellsworth” men’s Streamlined Moderne design wristwatch in 10K yellow gold fill, circa 1935.
The “Ellsworth” was named for famed polar explorer Lincoln Elssworth and was offered only in 1935. Despite being priced at only $40.00 to boost Depression-era sales, it was apparently not a very popular model as indicated by its extremely low production of just 2,551 watches. This may be due in part to its hinged lugs accommodating a very narrow strap, giving it a somewhat feminine appearance. This example is in excellent condition with only a few specks of brassing to the tips of the lugs, and one small spot on the bezel. Caseback is excellent and unengraved, with a little wear along one edge from opening. Case measures 41mm long and 28mm wide. Dial has been restored to its correct original appearance with a parchment white finish and solid 18K gold applied numerals. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 17 jewel Hamilton grade 987-F movement.
