Rare and highly desirable, the “Ristside Fraternity” is one of Gruen’s most dramatic Curvex models. The large, stepped hinged lugs prompt many collectors to refer to it as the “Bat Watch” or “Angel Wing Watch.” The hinged lugs allow the watch to be worn in a conventional manner on top of the wrist, or as a driver’s watch on the side of the wrist… hence the name “Ristside.” It was priced to consumers at $71.50 in 1950. I have offered only one or two these over the years, and this is the nicest example I have encountered. It is in crisp, excellent condition with only the faintest hints of wear to the very edges of the lugs. Lugs are perfect and undamaged. Extremely curved caseback is excellent and unengraved, with one tiny speck of wear in one corner. Case measures 47mm long and 24mm wide. Original dial is superb. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 17 jewel Gruen grade 440 Precision Curvex movement. I will also include the correct, original metal stretch bracelet.
