Rare Elgin “Lady and Tiger” ladies’ Art Deco design wristwatch in solid 14K white and green gold with black and gold enamel, circa 1928.
In the 1920s, no other watch manufacturer could match Elgin’s Art Deco designs for ladies’ wristwatches. Elgin retained top designers of international prominence to create some fantastic designs. Designed by Lucien Lelong, the “Lady and Tiger” is perhaps the most famous and sought-after of the enamel watches from this period and features and roaring tiger on one side and a 1920s flapper girl on the other, set in green gold frames. Extraordinarily expensive for its day, it was priced to consumers at $65.00 in 1928. This is the first example I have offered in over 5 years and is among the nicer ones I have seen. It is in excellent condition showing only light wear. Enamel is excellent and complete with only some minute marks. Hinged caseback is excellent and unengraved, with a few faint dings. The case measures 30mm long and 17mm wide. Original dial is superb. Has new glass crystal. has original flowered crown. This watch is powered by its correct 15 jewel Elgin grade 484 movement.
