Bulova “Lone Eagle” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in 14K white gold fill with black enamel bezel, circa 1927.
Bulova’s most famous Art Deco design of the 1920s, the “Lone Eagle” has stylized eagle heads set in black enamel in each corner. Originally introduced around 1926 as the “Conqueror,“ this model was renamed the “Lone Eagle” for Charles Lindbergh. Lindbergh was nicknamed the “Lone Eagle” following his historic solo transatlantic flight in May of 1927, and he personally endorsed the watch. Advertisements for the watch featured Lindbergh and his plane, the Spirit of St. Louis, quite prominently along with his testimonial. The watch was at the top of Bulova’s line and was priced to consumers at $50.00 in 1927, making it comparable in price to Hamilton wristwatches at the time. This example is in crisp, near mint condition with no brassing or wear. Enamel is superb and complete. Hinged caseback is excellent and unengraved. Case measures 33mm long and 26mm wide. Dial has been beautifully restored to its correct original appearance with a silver Butler and bold, Art Deco luminous numerals and luminous matching hands. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 17 jewel Bulova grade 10AN movement.
