Hamilton “Barrel Motif Engraved” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in 14K white gold fill, circa 1930.

This watch was known as the “New Barrel” in Hamilton’s internal documents, although it was cataloged and advertised simply as the “Barrel” model, which has caused some confusion among collectors today.  The designs of Hamilton’s “Barrel” and “New Barrel” model wristwatches underwent several changes during the course of the 1920s.  This version with highly stylized “Motif” engravings set in arched panels on the bezel followed an earlier version with more classic Art Nouveau style wreath engravings.  Hamilton records indicate that a total of 8,938 examples of the “New Barrel Engraved” were produced... a figure which includes both varieties, although this “Motif” variety seems to be the harder to find of the two.  This example is in excellent condition with only a tiny bit of brassing in the bezel corners.  Caseback is excellent and unengraved.  Case measures 35mm long and 29mm wide.  Dial has been beautifully restored to its correct original appearance with a silver Butler finish and bold, Art Deco luminous numerals and matching hands.  Has new glass crystal.  The watch is powered by its correct 17 jewel Hamilton grade 987 movement.
