Rare Hamilton “Langley” men’s Streamline Moderne wristwatch in solid 14K yellow gold, circa 1934.
With a very low production of only 1,800 examples in yellow gold, the Langley is a rare and desirable Hamilton model. Named for early American aviation pioneer Samuel Langley, the watch was originally introduced 1929 with a 3-piece hinged case produced by the Solidarity Watch Case Co., and was powered by the 17-jewel grade 987 movement. But after Solidarity went out of business around 1931, Hamilton contracted with Schwab & Wuischpard to make the “Langley” of two-piece construction such as this one, powered by the 19-jewel grade 979 movement. The change in case construction and the addition of the premium 979 movement resulted in a price increase for the “Langley,” up to $100.00 in 1934. These two-piece S&W cases are very scarce and I have only seen 4 or 5 total. This example is in excellent condition showing only very slight wear. Caseback is excellent and unengraved. The case measures 37mm long and 27mm wide. Dial has been beautifully restored to its correct original appearance with a parchment white finish and luminous numerals and matching hands. Has new glass crystal. This watch is powered by its correct 19 jewel Hamilton grade 979-F adjusted movement.
