Extremely rare Hamilton “Winthrop” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in 14K coral gold fill, circa 1939.
Hamilton introduced pink gold-filled and pink gold watches at the end of 1939, calling them “coral” gold, and producing them for just a year or two prior to the beginning of World War II. Hamilton’s catalogs and advertisements depict only the “Essex,” “Martin,” “Myron,” and “Wilshire” models available in coral gold-filled, yet Hamilton internal records indicate that 434 examples of the coral “Winthrop” were shipped to distributors on November 13, 1939, priced to consumers at $50.00. It is not known if there were additional shipments made, but judging by the small number of watches extant today, it is unlikely that many more were made. This is one of only a handful I’ve seen. It is in excellent condition with only a touch of brassing to the tips of the lugs. Curved caseback is excellent and unengraved, with a touch of light wear underneath the crown. Case measures 42mm long and 21mm wide. Copper finish dial is very good. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 17 jewel Hamilton grade 980 movement.
