Scarce Gruen “Imperial Tank” men’s Streamline Moderne design presentation wristwatch in solid 14K green gold, circa 1929.

The “Imperial Tank” was priced to consumers at $50.00 in 1929 and has a large rectangular case with a curved caseback and ornate engravings on the side of the case.  It is somewhat scarce in solid green gold, and this is the first I have ever offered.  This example is a presentation watch from the RMS Niagara, an ocean liner launched in 1912.  For a short time, the ship was heralded as the Titanic of the Pacific, and for obvious reasons was quickly re-billed as the Queen of the Pacific.  On June 19, 1940 the Niagara struck a German mine off the coast of New Zealand and sank in over 400 feet of water.  The ship was secretly carrying 8 tons of gold bullion worth 2.5 million British pounds as payment by England to the United States for war munitions.  This example is in excellent condition, with only the slightest indications of wear.  Caseback is excellent, with a 1929 presentation engraving.  Case measures 37mm long and 25mm wide.  Dial has been beautifully refinished to its correct original appearance with a silver Butler finish and gold embossed numerals.  Has new glass crystal.  The watch is powered by its correct 15 jewel Gruen grade 885 adjusted movement.
