Very rare Hamilton “Custer” men’s Streamline Moderne design Packard Motor Car Co. presentation wristwatch in solid 14K yellow gold, circa 1935.
The Packard Motor Car Co. began a relationship with Hamilton in the 1920s, ordering specially engraved pocket watches and wristwatches to present as gifts to valued employees with long service records. Rival auto manufacturer Cadillac also purchased watches from Hamilton in the 1920s and 1930s. Among the wristwatches purchased by Packard were the “Langley,” “Webster,” “Oakmont ,” “Custer,” “Cameron,” and “Brock” models… all solid gold. All of these special automotive presentation watches are quite rare and very desirable… with only a few hundred of each model produced. The “Custer” is the rarest of the Packard watches produced with the grade 982 movement, with fewer than 200 made; this is only the third example I have ever seen. It is in excellent condition showing only the very slightest indications of wear. Curved caseback is excellent and has the appropriate factory-engraved presentation from Packard Motor Car Co. The case measures 38mm long and 24mm wide. Original dial is very good. Has new glass crystal. This watch is powered by its correct 19 jewel Hamilton grade 982 movement.
