Very scarce Hamilton “New Barrel Wreath Engraved” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in 14K green gold fill, circa 1929.

This watch was known as the “New Barrel” in Hamilton’s internal documents, although it was cataloged and advertised simply as the “Barrel” model, which has caused some confusion among collectors today.  This “New Barrel” appeared in 1928 to replace the original style “Barrel” that was produced only in 1927.  The case of that very first “Barrel” was produced by the Wadsworth Case Co., while the case of this “New Barrel” was produced by the Fahys Watch Case Co. with several design refinements, most notably a curved caseback and a flared middle section.  This is the first version of the New Barrel made by Fahys and has wreath designs on the bezel and case sides.  Hamilton records indicate that 3,140 examples of the “New Barrel Engraved” were produced in green gold fill, priced to consumers at $57.00 in 1929.  This example is in excellent condition with only a tiny touch of brassing to the highpoints of the bezel corners.  The ornate Art Deco engravings on the bezel and case sides are nice and crisp.  Caseback is excellent, with an elegant Art Deco monogram.  Case measures 35mm long and 28mm wide.  Dial has been beautifully refinished to its correct original appearance with a silver Butler finish and Art Deco luminous numerals and matching hands.  Green gold fill crown is original.  Has new glass crystal.  The watch is powered by its correct 17 jewel Hamilton grade 987 movement.
