Extremely rare Hamilton “Ericsson” men’s Streamline Moderne design wristwatch in solid 14K yellow gold, circa 1932.
The “Ericsson” is one of the most mysterious and enigmatic Hamilton rarities. A mere 155 were produced in 14K yellow gold and they are rarely offered for sale. Housing the unique 19 jewel grade 401 movement, the “Ericsson” was part of a series of watches named for famous explorers, in this case for Leif Ericsson, believed to the first European to reach North America. The “Ericsson” has a heavily constructed, hand-made solid gold case made by the obscure Perrin Watch Case Co. An extraordinarily expensive wristwatch for the Great Depression, the “Ericsson” was priced to consumers at $150.00 in 1932. The watch’s exorbitant price and the economic conditions meant that sales of the watch were few, and Hamilton never sold more than 48 of them in any one year. This example is in excellent condition showing only the very slightest indications of wear. The caseback is superb and unengraved. The “Ericsson” is a large watch, measuring 41mm long by 26mm wide. Dial has a pleasing patina. Acrylic crystal is excellent. This watch is powered by its original 19 jewel Hamilton grade 401 adjusted movement.
