Extremely rare Hamilton “Byrd” men’s Streamline Moderne design wristwatch in solid 14K yellow gold, circa 1934.
The “Byrd” is one of the classic Hamilton rarities and is the cornerstone of any serious Hamilton collection. A mere 285 were produced in 14K yellow gold and they are rarely offered for sale. Housing the unique 19 jewel grade 401 movement, the “Byrd” was part of a series of watches named for famous explorers, in this case for Commander Richard Evelyn Byrd, first to fly over the North Pole. Byrd’s pilot on that flight was Floyd Bennett, after whom Hamilton also named a wristwatch. An extraordinarily expensive wristwatch for the Great Depression, the “Byrd” was priced to consumers at $140.00 in 1934. This example is in excellent condition showing only the very slightest indications of wear. The caseback is excellent and bears a presentation engraving from 1934. The case measures 40mm long by 27mm wide. Previously refinished dial shows moderate aging. This only the second applied gold numeral dial I have seen on a “Byrd.” Has new glass crystal. This watch is powered by its original 19 jewel Hamilton grade 401 adjusted movement.
